Arminia Bielefeld returns to the 2. Bundesliga with an impressive victory against Fortuna Düsseldorf. The visitors from the Rhineland were thoroughly beaten despite being outnumbered. Their boss was left fuming – because of the referee.
Fortuna Düsseldorf's promotion hopefuls had probably imagined the start of the new 2. Bundesliga season quite differently. Sporting director Klaus Allofs was particularly enraged by the referee's performance after the decisive 5-1 defeat at newly promoted Arminia Bielefeld on Saturday evening.

"That's absolutely ridiculous. The first yellow card – you have to live with that. I can still understand that, and it was in line with the policy up until then," Allofs said on RTL about referee Patrick Alt, who had already shown four yellow cards in the first half hour of his 100th second division game: "But then to give a yellow-red for that is absolutely ridiculous. I think it was the wrong decision."
"Everything happened at the right time"In the end, after Tim Oberdorf's first sending off in his 102nd second-division appearance in the lower house, it was "a real thrashing." Oberdorf received a yellow card and then a red card for repeated fouls within five minutes. Just 60 seconds later, Arminia equalized. "The sending off and the subsequent 1-1 draw put us on the losing track," the 68-year-old concluded.
Bielefeld's penalty scorer, Julian Kania, saw it similarly: "Everything happened at the right time. The yellow-red card, followed by the equalizer so close to halftime. We came back from the break and conceded a penalty less than ten minutes later," said Kania, who had secured the 2-1 lead for the newly promoted team. "With a man more, we played it down well, created many chances, and were very effective. Then a result like this came about." Coach Mitch Kniat also correctly assessed the course of the game: "Many, many moments went our way. Especially with the yellow-red card, we were cool enough to play it down. I liked it."
Fortuna's new signing Cedric Itten scored for the visitors in the 35th minute to make it 1-0. Noah Sarenren Bazee equalized in the 45th minute in front of 26,072 spectators. Düsseldorf were already down to ten men. Nine minutes after the restart, Kania turned the game around with a penalty (54th minute). Substitute Joel Felix (75th minute), Joel Grodowski (78th minute), and Sam Schreck (90th+7th minute) extended the lead.
